PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Former Sen. Rick Santorum enjoyed a great showing in Tuesday night’s Iowa Caucus.

Santorum nearly won the caucus, but fell short by just eight votes to Mitt Romney.

Now, the candidates are on their way to the next battle ground in New Hampshire.

Santorum got political legs last night as Iowa Republicans catapulted him onto the national stage in this race for president.

It was a surprise for many who thought Santorum’s low-budget, grassroots campaign in Iowa would never get off the ground.

Iowa caucus goers sent another message.

Santorum held a  lead over Romney for most of the evening, but eventually lost in the early morning hours.

Regardless, Santorum’s stunning results have put the social conservative on track for primaries in New Hampshire next Tuesday and again in South Carolina on Jan. 21.

Polls show him well behind in those states right now, but a boost out of Iowa could change the whole story.

“Thank you so much, Iowa. You have taken the first step of taking back this country,” Santorum said.

KDKA-TV Political Editor Jon Delano, spoke to Santorum Tuesday morning and he knows that being underestimated has always been an advantage to him.

Now, with the national spotlight on Pennsylvania’s former senator, Santorum can expect scrutiny of his record and the inevitable attacks from his Republican opponents.

The next few weeks will be key as to whether he can go the distance to become the Republican nominee for president.

By the way, the last president from Pennsylvania was James K. Buchanan who was elected in 1856.

KDKA AM’s Larry Richert and John Shumway also spoke to Santorum in Iowa and got his response as he prepares for New Hampshire.
