Local Grandmother Unknowingly Grew Marijuana Plants

CONNELLSVILLE (KDKA) -- A 67-year-old grandmother in Connellsville has been found not guilty of possession of and manufacturing a controlled substance.

Alberta Kelley told a Fayette County judge and jury a man she did not know approached her, gave her some seeds and told her if she planted them she would grow the prettiest flowers she has ever seen.

Kelley said the guy had a beard and wore a Smurf hat.

Those seeds grew into seven four-foot tall marijuana plants.

They were spotted in her backyard by police when they came to arrest her grandson on a different matter.

Kelley was charged, had her day in court and was acquitted Wednesday.

Her attorney, Thomas Shaffer, says Kelley has a seventh grade education, can barely read and simply told the jury the truth.

Kelley could not be found for comment.
