PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A woman gave birth on a Port Authority bus Monday night with the help of some passengers.
It happened on the 28X Airport Flyer, which had to pull over near the base of the Duquesne Incline.
Passenger Chris Bolla says the woman yelled out that her water broke about the time they got off the busway.
Soon, the woman, who Bolla says is 20-years old, was moved the backseat of the bus with her head propped up with a jacket.
Dr. Heberto Poveda, a retired radiologist, happened to be on board.
“I checked and there was no baby yet, but there was a strong contraction,” he said.
Bolla says he held the woman’s hand and prayed. He says she stayed on her cellphone with her mother. He also says she told him that this is her first child and that she wasn’t due until April.
“I saw the baby coming,” said Dr. Poveda. “I picked up the baby. She was breathing.”
That’s when paramedics showed up, and Poveda handed the baby over to them.
Mom and baby were taken to Magee Women’s Hospital of UPMC.
Bolla describes what he saw as a “beautiful thing.”
