Road, Utility Crews Brace For Snow, Ice

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- PennDOT as well as utility companies are ready for the wintry mix that's moving across our area.

Road crews spent much of Friday pre-treating roads by applying a salt brine to the pavement so that ice won't bond to the surface.

In Washington County, PennDOT began pre-treating with actual salt as soon as a mixture of light precipitation began falling shortly after 8 p.m.

Duquesne Light as well as West Penn Power both have concerns over ice forming on power lines or tree limbs and causing lines to come down. Both utilities have extra crews working.

At the Giant Eagle at Trinity Point, shoppers we talked with had plans to go home and stay there.

By 10:30 p.m., the road surface on Route 19 in South Strabane was wet, but not icy.

However, road crews cautioned drivers to be careful especially on secondary roads overnight and into the morning.
