Port Authority Bus Loses 2 Tires On Parkway West

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Two cars were damaged when two rear wheels flew off of a Port Authority bus on the Parkway West today.

The 28X Airport Flyer was traveling inbound on the Parkway West, just before the Carnegie exit, when it lost two of its left rear wheels.

The axle hit the ground and sparked as the driver pulled the bus off to the side of the road. KDKA-TV's Rick Dayton was behind the bus when the tires came off.

"You look up and you see sparks flying from the back end of a PAT bus where it's grinding its way across three lanes of traffic to come to a stop," Dayton said.

The tires flew into traffic.

"Driver Mike Regan swerves out of the way and literally the smoke is still coming off what turns out to be a bus tire," Dayton said.

Officials say there were 20 people on board the bus at the time of the accident.

According to the Port Authority's Jim Ritchie, none of the passengers were injured.

Two vehicles ran into each other while trying to avoid crashing into the tires, but there are no reported injuries.

The Port Authority is investigating the cause of the incident, but said it could take some time to determine.
