Community Says Goodbye To Fallen Deputy Sgt. Michael Todd May
MORGANTOWN, W. Va (KDKA) – A steady procession of family, friends and fellow officers are paying their final respects to Sgt. Michael Todd May who was killed in the line of duty during a police pursuit and crash last weekend.
May was killed when a driver suspected of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol rammed into his cruiser.
Police officers say it is ironic since May was a crusader against drunk driving.
"He was a big DUI guy," said Officer Ryan Shaw of the West Virginia University Police Department, who was a friend of May's. "He liked getting those people off the streets and it's just tragic that he had to go out being killed by a drunk driver."
Michael Wolfe of Monongalia County Homeland Security expressed the loss this community is feeling.
"Emergency services is a very tight knit group. It's a brother and sisterhood and obviously anytime you lose someone the emotions show."
Those who knew May said he was not only a good cop, but a caring person with an upbeat attitude.
On Friday Feb. 24 hundreds of police officers from more than 100 different departments across the country will attend his funeral at the Chestnut Ridge Church and say goodbye.
