17-Month-Old Baby's Death Under Investigation

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police are investigating after an unresponsive 17-month-old child died.

The Westmoreland County Coroner identified the baby as 17-month-old Colby Jozefczyk. He was found unresponsive in unit 11 on Hemlock Way in Saltsburg, Indiana County. He was pronounced dead at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital after he was found not breathing by his mother.

Neighbors say the child lived with his mother and older sister in a public housing project operated by the Indiana County Housing Authority.

"I just saw a lot of commotion, a lot of people frantic," Shileena Rugh, a neighbor, said. "Apparently her son had quit breathing and my next door neighbor went over to try to resuscitate him and the ambulance came it was just a hot mess after that."

Rugh also said there was a lot of police activity as well.

Police removed several brown bags of possible evidence from the home. A neighbor says the little boy's sister had recently been in the hospital, but did not know why.

"He was very tiny," Rugh said. "I actually thought he was an infant. She told me he was a year old and I mean I thought he was like, three months old."

Cathy Charlesworth lives across the street said the boy was adorable and was saddened to hear that he died.

"Kinda hard to believe it happened," she said.

The Westmoreland County Coroner conducted an autopsy Monday night. State police at the Indiana barracks say they don't expect to release any details on the death of the toddler until Tuesday at the earliest.
