Some Employees Evacuated After Western Psych Shooting

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police went door to door in Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, making sure there was no second gunman.

As floors were cleared, some employees were allowed to leave.

At first, some were loaded into a SWAT vehicle and taken to the Petersen Events Center. Later, two Port Authority buses were brought in to transport employees out.

KDKA's Susan Koeppen, who is recovering from open heart surgery at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, described what she saw from her hospital room.

"From my vantage point … we can see pretty much everything that's going on," she said.

"We can see Western Psych, we can see the front of the building and as Marty was pointing out, we saw the PAT buses pull up and we saw a lot of people being escorted on to those PAT buses and then being taken away."

Some employees ran as they were evacuated – distraught and unable to comment.

Brenda Waters: "What was going on when you were there? Did you hear anything?"

Woman: "I don't know as yet."

Waters: "Did you hear gunfire?"

Woman: "Yes, I did."

Waters: "Can you tell us what you know?"

Woman: "I truly don't know much of anything."

She went on to say she was "fairly close" to the gunfire.
