Western Psych Shooting Victim Remembered At Candlelight Vigil
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A candlelight vigil was held Sunday evening for the young man killed in last Thursday's shooting at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Oakland.
Dozens gathered to remember 25-year-old Michael Schaab outside the Old Route 66 Grille, which is the restaurant his family operates in Greensburg.
The vigil was organized by Schaab's friends. There were prayers and shared memories.
Schaab was a therapist working with geriatric patients at Western Psych.
Family and friends say he cared deeply for others.
"He was always my role model. There's no one else I ever wanted to grow up to be like other than him," said Scott Gordon, the victim's cousin. "He never got mad, he was never angry at anyone. You could say whatever you wanted and he would turn it around into something funny or just to make a joke to make everyone happy."
The Schaab family says they have been moved by the support they've received since their son's death.
Viewing for Schaab will continue Monday at the Bash-Nied Funeral Home in Delmont between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be Tuesday at St. John Baptist de la Salle Church in Delmont.
The Schaab family says Western Psych employees are welcome to attend.
