Latest Threats Prompt Evacuations At Residence Halls, Student Union

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Another round of bomb threats prompted more evacuations on the Pitt campus today in Oakland, including at several residence halls early this morning and at the university's student union during the busy lunch hour.

Students received an alert just before noon today saying a threat had been received for the Hillman Library, Frick Fine Arts building, David Lawrence Hall, Posvar Hall, the William Pitt Union and The University Club.

Just after that, another one came in for Panther Central.

Those buildings were evacuated until officials could perform a thorough sweep of the buildings.

Earlier this morning, students were alerted around 5:30 a.m. to evacuate Forbes, Ruskin, Lothrop, Pennsylvania and Bruce Halls while officials swept through those buildings. KDKA's Heather Abraham reports that that threat was reportedly emailed to a news organization in Pittsburgh.

"We're pretty use to this; we've become accustomed to it," said Evan Kremmel, a student. "It's just everyday protocol I suppose."

On Wednesday night, students were cleared out of the student union and the Litchfield Towers. Those buildings were evacuated around 11:30 p.m.

"It's becoming like a routine now. We all kind of know," added Michael Soukup, another student. "We have our bomb bags packed and we just pick everything up and find a location and all kind of huddle up and watch some movies."

Meanwhile, Pitt officials said Wednesday that they have made significant progress in the investigation, and are coming up with potential suspects.

U.S. Attorney David Hickton said in a statement that authorities are coming closer to finding those responsible.

The statement reads in part: "We thank the University of Pittsburgh students and community members for the information they have provided so far. The information has helped us to focus upon potential suspects."

The U.S. Attorney's Office says the investigation is continuing today. They are urging anyone with information to come forward to authorities
