Market Square Hoping For Boost From Valet Parking

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Businesses in Market Square are hoping to get a boost by offering a new parking service.

Beginning Tuesday night, $5 valet parking will be available.

Have you wanted to try out one of the restaurants in Market Square but don't want to deal with the hassle of Downtown parking?

Well, now you don't have to.

The Market Square Merchants Association is offering valet parking for just $5 every day from 5 p.m. until midnight.

"I know a lot of times people don't want to come down because parking is always an issue, so we wanted to alleviate that concern," Jordan Nicholas said.

Nicholas is a partner of Nicholas Coffee and the Diamond Market Bar and Grill. He said the program has been successful in other cities.

"It came up in the Merchants Association and it all sounded like a really good idea and then we took the idea to the Mayor's Office and we got a lot of help from the mayor, got a lot of help from the Parking Authority," Nicholas said.

Word of the parking plan is already spreading fast. Some say they will definitely take advantage of the service.

"I think it's a great idea. [Got to] do something to get the people back down into the 'Burgh," Bob Benson said.

"I think that's a good idea because there are a lot of nice places down here that people are missing out on," Sue Cuiffi said.

Patrons can drop their car off at the corner of Market Street and Market Square.

For now, this is just a six-month trial, but members of the Merchants Association hope to keep it going.
