Route 8 Reopens After Tractor-Trailer Crashes In Creek

SHALER (KDKA) – Part of a tractor-trailer has been removed from Pine Creek in Shaler and Route 8 has reopened to traffic after hours of work.

Shortly before 8 a.m., the A. Duie Pyle tractor-trailer launched off Route 8 and into Pine Creek.

Authorities say the removal of the semi was difficult.

"We had a tractor-trailer heading northbound earlier this morning during the heavy rain and apparently hydroplaned and went off the roadway into Pine Creek," Shaler Police Sgt. Sean Frank said.

Despite rushing and rising waters, the driver made it to shore.

"The driver was removed with some help of bystanders prior to police and EMS arrival," Frank said.

"Grabbed a tree, told him it was time to go, the water was rising and grabbed his arm and pulled him to shore," Dave Colwell, one of the rescuers, said.

The water kept rising and becoming faster and debris kept coming down stream.

Allegheny County HAZMAT was there to catch any diesel fuel downstream and the Blawnox Swiftwater Rescue Team was on hand to catch any retrieval personnel who might do the same.

"The tow company is going to down into the water area to try to retrieve the vehicle," Frank said.
