Arson Victim Billed For Cable Equipment Lost In Fire
JEANNETTE (KDKA) – Jamie Barber was asleep when an arsonist set fire to the apartment building where she lived in Jeannette.
It was March 28, and Barber had just seconds to get out. She was only able to grab her cat, a lock box and her purse.
“We made it out with our lives,” said Barber. “We lost everything.”
Of course, she never thought about the equipment from the cable company, but it later became a source of frustration.
She says Comcast sent her two bills for $619 for the two cable boxes and a router that were destroyed in the fire.
“I just can’t get over the fact that they’re demanding all this money and stuff,” said Barber.
She made repeated phone calls, “I said, ‘Lady, the house burned down. There’s nothing there at all!'”
Frustrated, she called KDKA-TV for help.
To Comcast’s credit, when Reporter David Highfield called spokesperson Bob Grove, Grove immediately said that Barber would not have to pay the $619.
“In cases where people don’t have renter’s insurance, we’ll waive those fees,” said Grove.
Barber is very grateful.
There have been 18 arsons in Jeannette. So far, no arrests.
