1 Dead In Carrick House Fire

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – One man is dead after fire broke out Sunday afternoon at a home in Carrick.

Emergency dispatchers say the blaze broke out around 2:30 p.m. in the 100-block of Owendale Avenue.

According to initial reports from the scene, the victim - a man possibly in his 60s - was found in the kitchen. He apparently lived alone.

Neighbors say the victim tended to mostly keep to himself. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office has not released his identity.

Several neighbors say they saw the smoke and tried to get into the house.

"We started banging on the garage door, and him and the other man tried to get in, but they could only go in like 20 feet, not even; it was so smoky," said neighbor Cindy DeAngelo.

"I tried getting in in the bottom; as soon as I opened the door, smoke [came] pouring out," Blair Vilsack, another neighbor, added.

Investigators remained on the scene into the evening hours. They believe the fire may have started in the kitchen area and that also appears where it was contained.

KDKA's Lynne Hayes-Freeland reports that investigators at the scene say there does not appear to be anything suspicious about the fire.
