Frick Park Lawn Bowling Club Opens New Clubhouse

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Millions of people spend a hot day in the park for the unofficial start to summer.

On Monday at Frick Park, it was not about hamburgers and hot dogs, but about bowling.

With the tones of the bagpipe hanging in the air, the Frick Park Lawn Bowling Club opened its summer season.

They also opened a new clubhouse.

The original facility was built in 1940, which was only a few years after the club was founded. Funding for a renovation came from the regional asset district and now the clubhouse is better than new.

To the untrained eye, the game looks like bocce but the game on these greens is lawn bowling.

The throwing objects look like balls, but they are not round. It's part of the reason that they are called bowls.

While competition is part of the day, it's much more than that.

"I enjoy the people I meet and the people I bowl with," Jack Phillips said.
