Lightning Sparks Fires At Brookline & Crafton Homes

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Lightning is believed to be the cause of two Sunday night fires around the area.

According to officials, the fires broke out in Brookline and Crafton around 11 p.m.

In Brookline, lightning struck a home in the 1400-block of Merrick Street around 10:45 p.m.

The homeowner heard a loud bang and knew it was lightning immediately.

Just as she was calling 911, a neighbor came rushing over to alert her to the fire.

"I called 911 and I started to come out of the house as my neighbor was coming in to tell me to get out that my 3rd floor was on fire. She could see it from her side door," Pat Kahlil said.

In Crafton, lightning hit a home at 11 Division Street around 10:50 p.m.

There are no reported injuries in either fire and the Red Cross is assisting two people with shelter and food.
