Fire Closes Popular Playground In Latrobe

LATROBE (KDKA) -- A popular Westmoreland County play area is closed indefinitely after vandals set a fire that caused extensive damage.

About a third of the Playland at Legion Keener Park in Latrobe was destroyed by that fire early Saturday morning.

Police estimate it could cost up to $50,000 to repair the playground.

The wooden play area was built in 1992 by about 2,000 volunteers from across the area.

"It's just such a shame because it took so much to build it up to begin with and it's such a beautiful place – a nice place to take the kids and it's safe because you can sit around and read and just let them play," Carol Miller, of Latrobe, said.

The reward for information leading to an arrest in the playground arson is now up to more than $2,000.
