Kennywood's 'Black Widow' Continues To Thrill Riders

WEST MIFFLIN (KDKA) -- What goes up, must come down. But will your stomach come down with it?

Kennywood's Black Widow ride is named for a spider who eats her mate.

"It shouldn't scare you. It's a fun ride." Those are reassuring words from project manager Matt Hyatt. He supervised construction of the 147-foot spinning pendulum which opened in 2012.

"It's a pendulum motion," he says, "that takes you up to 120 degrees. And it's traveling at a speed of 65 miles an hour.

"And it's spinning in a clockwise and a counter-clockwise rotation.

"It'll stop and then go in the opposite direction as you're riding the ride."

His dizzying description pales in comparison with the ride itself. But judging from those who came back for more, the Black Widow was a hit.
