Freedom High School Seniors Fined After Prank

FREEDOM (KDKA) -- School's out for summer at Freedom Area High School, but it was party central a couple of weeks ago.

At midnight, about two dozen seniors put 2,000 to 3,000 balloons inside the school. They got into the school through an unlocked door.

"We threw the balloons through the … we did the window paint and everything and then got out," Shya Moon, a senior, said. "We didn't stay in to do anything extra, break anything or anything."

Three of the seniors returned to the scene of the crime Wednesday. They were all charged with simple trespassing and had to pay a $315 fine.

They broke in through an unlocked gate and unlocked door. The students spent about 15 minutes in the school and even mugged for the security cameras.

Sure enough, the next day they were nabbed by administrators who didn't think it was funny and hauled them before a magistrate who ordered them all to pay the fine.

They aren't fazed by it.

"It was senior prank," Kyeem Moon said. "This is what we've been waiting for since freshman year."

The students say they didn't think they were breaking the law.

The superintendent saying he understands the senior prank tradition, but says this went too far, adding the students could have been charged with felonies.

The school district says the open gate and the open door have now been fixed.
