Smartphone Apps To Help Mark Dad's Special Day

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It's Father's Day, and if you're looking for a gift that's better than the traditional coffee mug or tie, then look no further than your smartphone.

There are apps to mark dad's special day, no matter what he likes to do.

If dad is getting a new smartphone or tablet this Father's Day, there are plenty of apps to combine his love of technology, with his other favorite hobbies.

For dads who like to get out and hit the links, "Golfshot" for Apple products and Android is a gift on its own.

With a heftier price tag than most apps at $29.99, GPS enabled "Golfshot" tracks more than 35,000 courses worldwide, comes with a handicap calculator and lets dad keep tabs on his performance.

If grilling is more his game, Weber's "On The Grill" app for iPhone, iPad and Android dubs itself as a "mobile grilling companion."

Dad's smartphone gets access to more than 300 recipes, creates grocery lists for those recipes and has a grill guide and timer to make sure any item turns out just right.

Can't take dad out to the ballgame on Father's Day?

Plan a future trip or tell stories about the past with the "Ballpark Envi" app, which has pictures and information about every current big league stadium, plus most from days gone by.

And if dad's favorite thing to do is build or fix things, the "iHandy Carpenter" app for iPhone is a virtual toolkit, with 5 built-in tools.
