NORTH SIDE (KDKA) – Children will soon have a new place to play on the North Side.

About 200 volunteers are building a playground and they are doing all the work in less than 24 hours.

“We are building the stairs to the slide, so it’s hot, but it’s been fun,” Craig Totino said.

Crews are working fast and in the heat to build a safe haven for kids. It will have a rock wall, six slides and plenty of fun.

“I think it’s pretty impressive to see that there will be a playground here in a couple of hours,” Amy McCarty said.

The playground sits in the Allegheny Commons Park off of North Avenue.

The project is a real team effort, between Kaboom – a national non-profit that builds playgrounds throughout the country – and the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities, which is a group of mayors and city officials from across the state.

They aren’t just talking about how to improve a community, they’re actually doing it.

“To go from early morning with nothing here to this afternoon there will be a wonderful playground for the young children of the North Side to enjoy. So, we thank everybody for coming out today and participating in such a worthwhile cause,” Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said.

“It’s really amazing. There are a lot of people who have been putting a lot of hard work into this for the last few months, but it’s great to be able to see the community rally together,” Lisa Klane said.
