Analyst: Jurors Likely Anticipated Hearing From Jerry Sandusky

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Testimony concluded in the Jerry Sandusky trial without the defendant taking the stand.

Criminal defense attorney Matt McClenahen says it's hard to say if Sandusky's attorney made the right decision.

"It would be like Mike Tomlin commenting on whether or not the Cleveland Browns should pick a particular starting quarterback – he wasn't watched them play at practice, he hasn't watched all the game film," he said.

It's been reported that Sandusky wanted to testify, but was talked out of it at the last minute by his attorneys who were likely concerned about a rigorous cross examination and the possibility that the prosecutors could bring up an unaired portion of an interview Sandusky did with Bob Costas.

"Well, that tells me that the attorneys have gone over direct and cross examination with Jerry Sandusky and they determined that it would not be in his best interest to testify," McClenahen said.

Prosecutor Joseph McGettigan will not be able to address the fact that Sandusky didn't testify in his closing argument, but it's possible defense attorney Joe Amendola will explain why he changed his mind after promising jurors they would hear from the man on trial.

"The jurors are going to remember," McClenahen said. "They would have been anticipating Jerry Sandusky's testimony throughout this whole trial simply because attorney Amendola brought that up in his opening statement."
