15-Year-Old Killed In Collier Twp. Crash

COLLIER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A 15-year-old is dead and four other were badly injured when the car they were in slammed into a tree Wednesday evening in Collier Township.

Flowers now lay near the scene of the fatal accident at the intersection of Scotts Run Road and Noblestown Road. The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The accident claimed the life of 15-year-old Scott Katonka of Carnegie.

The car swerved and crashed. Both Katonka and another person were ejected from the vehicle.

Police say there were five Chartiers Valley High School students in the car when it crashed.

Katonka was pronounced dead at the scene. Two victims were taken to Allegheny General Hospital and another two went to Children's Hospital.

It's unclear what caused the vehicle to lose control, but Allegheny County homicide detectives are handling the investigation and accident reconstruction.

Even though school is out for the summer, Chartiers Valley School District says they want to be supportive of all the students affected by the loss.

They released a statement early Thursday morning: "We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the families impacted by last night's tragedy. Counselors will be available at the high school."

Officials say those counselors will be on hand as long as the students need them.
