Route 28 Ramp Closure Could Cause More Traffic Headaches

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) --The inbound ramp from Route 28 to the Veterans Bridge is closing this evening and it could impact more than just the drivers who use 28.

The closure signs move into place at 8 p.m. and the ramp isn't expected to reopen until the end of the month.

From behind the wheel, drivers coming in on Route 28 heading for the city would normally use the Veterans Bridge to the Uptown end of the Golden Triangle.

Once the work begins, drivers who use that stretch of road will be forced onto the ramp that connects you to the North Shore Expressway, then to the Fort Duquesne Bridge where you can access downtown.

If however you choose to follow the posted detour be forewarned, you're in for a ride.

Down East Ohio to Madison and continuing up winding East Street all the way to the Venture Street on-ramp going south on 279.

Then, back down through the East Street valley with the rest of the morning rush hour traffic, and then eventually up and onto the Veterans Bridge. That's about a 4.5 mile detour.

"We always encourage people to find alternate routes," PennDOT spokesperson Jim Struzzi said. "That is the posted detour. We can only post one detour, but anyone who knows Downtown Pittsburgh knows there are alternate routes you can take other than using that ramp. So, if people know an alternate ramp, we encourage them to use it."
