DERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — A 3-year-old boy is in the hospital after nearly drowning while swimming Sunday evening at his home in Westmoreland County.

First responders were called to the Rhododendron Drive home in Derry Township around 7:30 p.m.

According to authorities, they worked for about 20 minutes to stabilize the boy after he apparently took on water while swimming in an above-ground pool.

“When we got out there, Mutual Aid already had the patient… they were working the patient, and they called us for a landing zone, which we set up about a half a mile up the road from the residence,” said Chief Mark Paintiane, of the Derry Township Fire Department.

The boy was taken by medical helicopter to Children’s Hospital for treatment.

There’s been no word on his condition.
