SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — One person is dead following an ATV accident in Fayette County.

The accident happened in Springfield Township near South Connellsville.

The victim was riding a trail with a friend when the accident happened.

“A mid-50’s gentleman – he and his friend were riding up along the CSX tracks – not on the tracks but on the gravel road beside the tracks,” Fayette EMS Chief Rick Adobato said.

“They got up to where Indian Creek intersects with the Youghiogheny River, decided to turn around there, the gentleman backed up,” Adobato continued. “When he backed up, he got too close to the edge and went over about a 30-foot cliff down onto some rocks and stuff. He was dead upon our arrival.”

The man’s friend had a cell phone which is how rescuers got to the scene.

The victim has been identified as 61-year-old Anthony Joseph Bartholomalie.
