Man In Custody After Overnight Police Pursuit, Crash In New Castle

NEW CASTLE (KDKA) -- Police took one man into custody overnight following a vehicle chase, violent crash and short foot pursuit in Lawrence County.

According to investigators, it all started when a Union Township police officer attempted to make a traffic stop around 2:30 a.m. at Lowry and W. Washington Streets in New Castle.

Authorities say the man who was driving the car instead took off, leading the officer on a high-speed chase that took them down Route 422 toward Youngstown, Ohio, and then back to New Castle.

Union Township police identify the man as 37-year-old James Otis of Ohio. Officials say police tried to pull him over for a missing license plate.

The vehicle chase ended when the car slammed into a tree, flipped several times and then hit a house.

Police say the suspect then got out of the vehicle and took off on foot. He was taken into custody just a few blocks away a short time later.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
