Overturned Tractor Trailer Creates Morning Traffic Mess On Turnpike

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- There was a traffic mess along the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Parkway East Thursday morning after state police say a driver lost control of a tractor trailer in the rain and the vehicle overturned, blocking the road.

The accident happened around 4:40 a.m. on the westbound side of the Turnpike in Plum.

The FedEx tandem tractor trailer flipped onto its side near Mile Marker 49, and shut down the westbound side of the road between Pittsburgh and Allegheny Valley exit for about six hours.

According to state police, the tractor trailer was headed west in the right lane of traffic when the driver lost control while negotiating a downhill curve in this morning's storm.

The tractor trailer hit the guiderail, crossed both westbound lanes, hit the concrete median barrier and then rolled onto its passenger side, state police said.

Eventually, crews were able to open up one lane of traffic but were on the scene through the morning clearing the crash.

Heavy delays were reported in that area along the Turnpike as well as on the Parkway East where much of the traffic was rerouted.

No injuries were reported and the road was finally fully reopened around 11:30 a.m.
