PennDOT To Close Inbound Squirrel Hill Tunnels For Weekend Work

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- If you travel the Parkway East or live in the city's East End, a continuing road construction project could tie up traffic in that area this weekend.

The inbound lanes of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel are set to close today at 9 p.m. for rehabilitation work.

The closure will last all weekend as the inbound lanes are not scheduled to reopen until 5 a.m. Monday.

PennDOT officials say signs will be posted to guide motorists around the area.

The detour around the tunnel takes drivers through Regent Square and down through Squirrel Hill, which is sure to cause congestion in eastern neighborhoods.

According to PenDOT, the posted detour will require westbound traffic to form a single lane exiting the Edgewood-Swissvale interchange.

People driving in that area this weekend are warned to expect delays and advised to use alternate routes if possible.
