Teen Girls Charged In Swissvale Purse Snatching

SWISSVALE (KDKA) -- Two teenage girls have been charged with mugging a woman in Swissvale and more arrests are expected.

The robbery happened at 10:20 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Vernon and Woodstock Streets.

The 62-year-old victim had just gotten off the bus not far from her home. Investigators say five people were lying in wait to rob her.

"The victim was knocked to the ground and she was unconscious at the time," Allegheny County Police Supt. Charles Moffatt said. "She suffered a head injury. She was taken to the hospital where she's still in the hospital. She's in a semi-conscious state, but she's going to survive."

Surveillance video recorded them fleeing the scene.

County police are looking for three more people involved in the robbery and assault.

"Even to grab someone's purse, there's always a chance that the person resists or fights back and has a heart attack or something, it can lead to death," Moffatt said. "We've seen it in the past."

The girls in custody, ages 13 and 15 who are being charged as juveniles, are facing charges of robbery, aggravated assault and conspiracy. They will be taken to the Shuman Center.
