Former U.S. Senator Arlen Specter Hospitalized

PHILADELPHIA (KDKA) -- Former U.S. Senator Arlen Specter is in the hospital with what's being called a "serious illness."

Specter's family and friends confirm to the Philadelphia Daily News that he's in the hospital but aren't elaborating on the illness.

CNN reports Specter is "battling for his life" after recently being diagnosed with a "serious form of cancer."

Specter was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease in 2005. It returned three years later. He's been in remission since then.

Specter retired in 2010 after serving 30 years in the Senate. He's now 82.
