National Democratic Party Chair In Pittsburgh To Push Obama

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chair of the Democratic National Party, says her visit to Pittsburgh this weekend is designed to shore up Pennsylvania as an Obama state.

"We're making sure that we're taking nothing for granted in Pennsylvania. This is a key battleground state," she told KDKA political editor Jon Delano in an exclusive sit-down interview on Saturday. "President Obama was proud to win Pennsylvania in 2008, and we're looking forward to winning Pennsylvania again."

The Romney campaign and his SuperPACs have stopped running campaign commercials in the state, but Wasserman Shultz insists, "We're not focused on what the Romney campaign is doing, other than to draw on contrasts."

One contrast - energy - where Gov. Romney has said the President has a war on coal and natural gas.

"President Obama is committed to making sure that we strike a balance. We've got to make sure that we protect the environment," says Wasserman Schultz.

Another contrast - woman's issues.

"Before we passed Obamacare into law, insurance companies could drop women or deny us coverage just because we were women," she said. "Insurance companies charged us more than men for the same coverage, just because we were women."

This week, Romney zeroed in on foreign policy, so the DNC chair was asked if the embassy protests were a sign of a failed Obama foreign policy.

"You know it's really unfortunate that Mitt Romney chose to politicize what was really a very challenging foreign policy crisis this week," Wasserman Schultz said. "We lost a United States ambassador and several of our diplomats."

Wasserman Shultz will be in Pittsburgh overnight this weekend. She's going to be joined by Dr. Jill Biden, the Vice President's wife, at a campaign event Sunday at the Obama headquarters in the Strip District.
