Boy, 12, Injured In Fayette County Shooting

UNIONTOWN (KDKA) - A 12-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital Sunday evening after reportedly being shot in Fayette County.

Authorities say it happened around 7:30 p.m. on S. Mt. Vernon Avenue in Uniontown.

"Our department got a report that there was a 12-year-old male that was shot," Det. Donald Gmiter said.

The child was shot one time and the bullet went through his hand and into his abdomen.

"Upon our arrival, EMS had transported him to Uniontown Hospital. He was subsequently flown to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment," Det. Gmiter said.

While paramedics fought to stabilize the boy, the investigation began to determine how he was shot and it didn't take long to find the alleged gunman.

"The suspect, David Brooks, is the victim's older brother. He's 19," Det. Gmiter said. "The suspect was taking a firearm out of his pocket. The gun went off."

Police are still trying to determine why Brooks had a gun.

According to police, David Brooks tried to ditch the weapon in a nearby creek, but it was recovered.

"Mr. Brooks has been charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and a firearms charge. He's lodged in the Fayette County Jail on a $50,000 bond," Det. Gmiter said.

The family is dealing with a double tragedy with one child fighting for his life and another child in jail. Police said the lesson is as simple as it is safe.

"Our children are our number one priority. Keep our firearms locked up," Det. Gmiter said.

Timmy Brooks remains in Pittsburgh's Children's hospital and his condition is not being released.
