Law Enforcement Veteran Weighs In On Police Violence

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) --- It's been a violent and chaotic couple of days for local law enforcement.

The public and fellow officers have called the patrolmen involved in the recent shooting "heroes."  But one local expert on gun violence also calls them "warriors."

John Bruner is a 20-year law enforcement veteran and swat negotiator who founded In-Crisis Consulting in Pittsburgh.

He studies something called "The Warrior Mindset," a dynamic engrained into police during training to aid in survival when they are in a critical incident.

He says, recently, there's been an increased focus on the vital techniques officers are trained to use.

Bruner told KDKA's Kym Gable, "The warrior mindset, the survival mindset, that's mainstreamed nationwide, even beyond within our industry, and that's what we're being trained. Every person we encounter may decide that they want to take your life."

He says in the aftermath of gun violence, the obvious question is raised.

"Why are people snapping?" he says. "People snap when their ability to cope with stress is overwhelmed. And I think we saw that told in Western Pennsylvania."
