MENALLEN TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — He was trying to do a good deed, but ended up being robbed at gunpoint.

Police say it happened when the Good Samaritan tried to help two people in distress on the side of a local road. Now, police say the whole incident was a ruse and the real motive was robbery.

The incident happened along New Salem Road in Fayette County between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. Saturday.

Authorities say the young man was headed home from Wal-Mart when he saw what looked like a broken-down car with passengers inside. He pulled over to offer help.

“When he asked if they needed help, one of the males that was standing outside the vehicle did pull out a handgun, asked for money and a few other things,” said Trooper Stefani Plume, of State Police.

Police say the crooks grabbed the Good Samaritan’s cash, chucked his car keys and headed on down the road.

“They grabbed everything, grabbed his wallet, grabbed his keys and held a gun to his head,” said Brittany Whoolery, of Fayette County.

State police call this sort of robbery unusual. However, they recommend folks think before they pull over and offer help to strangers.

“Considering the early morning hours, the fact that it was dark and he was alone, if something like this were to happen in the future, we obviously would urge people call 911 and let the proper authorities go and help someone like that,” said Trooper Plume.

Meantime, friends and family of the young man say he’s all shook up over the incident.

“Most people, you know, they’re just trying to be nice. People like that, they just come and ruin everybody’s night,” added Whoolery. “He’s really afraid to go out in public now. He’s been really shaken up about this whole thing.”

The victim got his car keys and wallet back, but the wallet was empty. He was not hurt during the incident.

State police are asking for the public’s help in tracking down the suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to contact them.
