Sts. Simon & Jude Students Donate To KDKA-TV Turkey Fund

SCOTT TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Local students stepped up Monday to help families in need this Thanksgiving.

As the children at Sts. Simon & Jude and their families are getting ready for their own Thanksgiving celebrations, they thought it would be great to reach out and help others in the community.

And they're doing that by donating to the KDKA-TV Turkey Fund.

In a very cute, very heartwarming ceremony, the children brought their dollars and they stuffed turkeys.

"Every year in the past, we've always had a prayer service in the church and the children usually bring up a can non-perishable food item to give to the community; and when we read about the turkey drive, we thought we'd like to get involved with that," said Maureen Torcasi, of Sts. Simon & Jude Early Childhood Center. "This year, we thought we'd stuff turkeys with dollars instead to help with that wonderful event."

KDKA's Jennifer Antkowiak: "How do you think the kids feel about this? Do you think it hit home for them?"

"We do talk to them a lot of times about the important things that happen with them at home, and one of the things they always say is they have food, they have clothes and we have families that might be right in your neighborhood that you don't know about that might not be able to have a turkey dinner," said Torcasi. "And that we are helping them."

KDKA's Jennifer Antkowiak brought all the money donated at the ceremony back to KDKA. Next, it will go off to PNC Bank, where it will be doubled. And it will go to feed a lot of families this Thanksgiving holiday.
