Lower Burrell Standoff Ends Peacefully

LOWER BURRELL (KDKA) -- A standoff situation in Westmoreland County ended peacefully Thursday morning with one man being taken into custody.

According to police, the standoff began around 2 a.m. at a home on Waughaman Lane in Lower Burrell.

The suspect, Michael Hubert, was taken into custody around 9:30 a.m.

Hubert will spend his Thanksgiving in a jail cell. Investigators say they believe he may have been highly intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Police say just before 2 a.m., Hubert allegedly fired a single shot into the floor inside his home with his girlfriend nearby.

"One of the cops came around the back door and said there's a guy with a rifle across the street, keep your dog in, don't go by the doors… just stay in the house," said Terri Sharick, a neighbor.

Sharick took video from her home across the street with a house full of family for the holiday. They all gathered in a safe place to watch police and CERT members surround the home.

"My daughter was scared… not too much. We were just kind of wondering what was happening," Sharick said. "I don't think we realized he was shooting guns there; this was kind of the first we had heard of it."

Police say it was eight days ago when Hubert's girlfriend called police after he allegedly walked outside the home and fired off 15 rounds.

Police say Hubert was actually out on bond from that arrest when police were called back to the house Thursday morning.

After this latest incident, several guns were removed from the home after Hubert was taken into custody.

Police say they are getting a warrant to further search the home.

Hubert is facing charges of aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment. More charges could be filed.
