Urban Outfitters Holiday Catalog Sparks Boycott

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Arriving in mailboxes over the past week has been a holiday catalog with the latest fashions, gift ideas and some words once thought the province of only old sailors.

The Urban Outfitters Christmas Catalog features a calling bird of the single finger variety and several appearances of the "F" word, and we don't mean fig, or fur or Frankincense.

Some parents are even calling for a boycott of the chain store.

"This is very distasteful," said one local mom who was concerned about her smaller children seeing the catalog. Even on the streets of Oakland where the store's target demographic rule the sidewalk there was dismay. "Unnecessary", and "a sad commentary on our generation" were some of the reactions. But there was also acknowledgement that for many in the college age crowd the advertising will resonate and be effective.

So far Urban Outfitters has not responded to our request for a comment.

This isn't the first time Urban Outfitters has faced controversy. So far in 2012 the store has been boycotted because of controversial Irish shirts, and pictures of girls making out with other girls in another catalog, among other things.

We want to know what you think about the controversial catalog. Join the conversation on the KDKA-TV Facebook Page.
