City Council Gives Approval To Turn Parking Meters Off At 6 P.M.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - You can still park for free in the evening at city meters, for now.

After a lengthy debate, Pittsburgh City Council gave preliminary approval to turn off parking meters at 6 p.m.

Enforcement was scheduled to stay in effect through 10 p.m. beginning on Jan. 1, 2013. However, the 6 p.m. enforcement deadline will only be in effect till June 30, 2013.

A number of businesses argued that the 10 p.m. plan would hurt their businesses. Several members of City Council acknowledged that this Band-Aid approach merely, "kicks the can down the road."

Councilman Bill Peduto said the pension fund isn't receiving the expected revenue from the parking plan anyway. However, Councilman Ricky Burgess disagreed.

City Council also said it wanted time to work out concerns about problems with new parking meters.
