The Congressman believes families should be aware of the warning signs and discover treatment for their relatives as soon as possible. He says mental illness is treatable and a majority who suffer are not violent.

When it comes to society, he says that stigma is a barrier to treatment and people need to eliminate embarrassment and educate the public about mental health illnesses.

The Congressman believes research and thoughtful discussion will help to address the root of the problem.
