Mental Health Issues In The News

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) -- KDKA Radio's Rob Pratte sat down with Dr. Suzanne Vogel-Scibilia, Beaver County Psychiatric Services Medical Director, to talk about mental health issues that have been in the news since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Vogel-Scibilia says contrary to popular belief, mental health issues and violence are a world-wide problem and don't just exist in the U.S.

She discussed the money being spent on mental health issues and says part of the problem is that money can be taken away from mental health and used for other health issues.

Vogel-Scibilia said one of the biggest problem is when people don't think they have a mental health issue, and so they never seek the professional help they may need.

Another problem is the lack of infrastructure for mental health outpatient care,  forcing people to have to wait too long to see a doctor.
