PITTSBURGH (AP) – Police in western Pennsylvania say five officers who shot at a car that officers contend was endangering people during a police chase have been cleared to return to duty.

The Pittsburgh officers, who were working off-duty security details on the South Side, were placed on paid leave after the Jan. 13 shooting. Police said the driver refused to stop after running a red light and was hitting parked cars in the bustling area known for night life.

Thirty-two-year-old Donald Burris Jr. of Carnegie was shot in the arm and his mother was shot in the face. He was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.

Police said the officers had been deemed “psychologically fit for duty.”

Police and prosecutors are still investigating whether they were justified in opening fire.
