2 Injured After Third-Story Deck Collapses

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Two men are in the hospital after the third-story deck they were working on collapsed Tuesday afternoon.

It happened after 4 p.m. near 49th and Harrison streets in Lawrenceville.

Two males, one in his late teens and one in his mid-20s, were injured in the incident and were reported to be unconscious, but still breathing after falling.

They were eventually taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in serious condition, but have since been upgraded to stable condition.

The men reportedly fell 25 to 30 feet from a four-story apartment building they were working on, that's scheduled to open in the spring.

Despite falling such a long distance, authorities say the men may have hit the second story balcony on the way down and landed in mud, which helped to break their falls.

No one was trapped underneath.

A building inspector was on the scene Tuesday night and OSHA representatives are expected Wednesday.

Co-workers of the men who were one scene declined interview requests from the media.
