Local Hair Studio Helps Pamper Cancer Patients

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - There's an old saying that you can't truly understand what another person is feeling until you walk a mile in their shoes.

One lady in Hazelwood has battled breast cancer and today, she is doing something really special for people who are fighting the disease.

It looked like any other Monday morning at Mo'Nae's Hair Studio in Hazelwood. It's a busy place, but the customers served today have been diagnosed with or are currently undergoing treatment for cancer.

Organizer Karen Henderson has been on the other side.

"It was hard going through the chemo, you know, losing your hair, crying. And I knew how I felt and that's why I wanted to do this for everybody else because I knew how I felt," Henderson said.

The ladies in the shop are all volunteers. One came from Atlanta, another from Cincinnati just to help with the big day.

"This has just been so relaxing and wonderful. It just makes me want to cry, that's what makes you get through the whole thing," Betty Foster said.

"Makes me feel really appreciated and special that someone would care so much. Women with cancer. It makes me very humble," Jeannine Rust said.

It's not all about the ladies. Gentlemen are taken care of as well, but most of the services cater to the fairer sex.

None of the 50 clients pay a dime on this day of caring. From a business standpoint, that makes no sense, but Karen said this has nothing to do with making money.

"It makes sense to me. That's why I'm doing it," Henderson said.
