Jurors Hear Smyrnes Confession Tape, Expected To Make Decision Wednesday

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Prosecution has rested in trial of Ricky Smyrnes.

Jurors heard from Smyrnes in his own words Tuesday, when prosecutors played a taped statement from February 2010.

In the roughly hour-long recording, Smyrnes confesses to his role in the killing.

He says co-defendant Melvin Knight forced him to become involved.

He also provides a motive for the killing, saying that his fiancé and co-defendant Angela Marinucci was jealous of his relationship with Jennifer Daugherty and that was fueling anger among the group.

Smyrnes admits to slitting Daugherty's one wrist, cleaning up and helping to dispose of the body.

Members of Daugherty's family also testified about the day she went missing.

Smyrnes will not testify on the advice of counsel who do not want to subject him to cross-examination.

Closing arguments will take place in the morning.

The jury is expected to get the case tomorrow.
