Diving Into The Sequester With Congressman Rothfus

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - Congress is on a naming spree when it comes to big issues. First, we had the Fiscal Cliff, and now everyone is talking about the Sequester. What exactly is the Sequester and why should we be worried?

KDKA-AM's Larry and John talk to U.S. Congressman Keith Rothfus about what the Sequester is, which has to do with a series of severe automatic spending cuts put in place several years ago that would kick in if Congress didn't lower the deficit.

"It's a meat cleaver approach," says Congressman Rothfus. "It's a sign of Congress not taking their job seriously, and the President's job seriously, of coming up with a solution to the debt crisis we find ourselves in."

Congressman Rothfus criticizes past Congresses that he says passed the responsibility on to the future, and not solving the budget issues the Federal government. He also talks about what programs will be cut, including a big chuck of the Defense budget.

The Sequester will take effect on March 1, if Congress doesn't solve the issue.
