Pickup Truck Crashes Into Uniontown Store, Causes Significant Damage

UNIONTOWN (KDKA) – A convenience store in Fayette County will be closed for an undetermined period of time after a truck crashed through the front doors Saturday night.

According to police, the incident happened at Byers Market in the 100-block of Connellsville Street in Uniontown around 7:45 p.m.

An 18-year-old man thought the pickup truck was in park when it rolled forward and crashed through the front doors of the store.

The man has been identified as Joseph Engle, of Uniontown.

"Truck came through the building and he started cursing and he put it in reverse and went back out of the building," employee David Byers said. "Thank god nobody was in the store. It was just me and another employee and then he came back in running to make sure everyone was OK."

"He claims he thought he was pushing the brake, but instead was pushing the gas," he said.

However, Engle does not have a driver's license and the truck belonged to another man who allowed him to use it.

Engle has been charged with driving without a license, while the other man, Terry Hart, 19, of Daisytown, was charged with allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a vehicle.

An estimate on the damage to the store was not available.
