Road Crews Bracing For Latest Winter Storm

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Plows and salt trucks are going to be very busy starting later tonight as the latest winter storm makes its presence known.

On a day with crystal clear skies and clear blacktop, it would appear that spring has finally knocked out winter, but that's all about to change this afternoon.

At the PennDOT North Shore lot, massive trucks are inches away from the plows, in anticipation several inches of snow.

"We will be activating across the state our Emergency Management Response teams. That means we'll be staffing all operations 24/7. We're going to have full crews around the clock. We'll have management personnel monitoring our traffic cameras, monitoring all the roads," PennDOT Spokesman Jim Struzzi said. "We're good on materials. It does tax our budget. No matter how much snow falls, you still have to treat it."

PennDOT has its plows, salt and anti-skid ready to go and Greentree Hardware has a lot as well.

"We still have plenty of rock salt, shovels, ice scrapers, lock de-icer windshield de-icer. Whatever you need, we got it," Diane Dunbar said.

In a twist of seasonal irony, something more than snow is headed for the store on Wednesday in preparation for planting season.

"I have my Scotts delivery coming tomorrow. They are going to be delivering our mulch and top soils," Dunbar said.

The good news is that warmer temperatures will climb into the 50s.
