MILLVALE (KDKA) — A Millvale man who just got out of jail is now speaking out about video that surfaced earlier this year of a Taser being used on him while in police custody.
Thomas Smith, in handcuffs, is shown in the video banging his head against the edge of a desk.
Millvale Police Officer Nicole Murphy speaks out.
Officer: “He’s going to [expletive] his head open. We are going to sit down at the hospital with this retard.”
Another Officer: “You’re gonna have to sit down at the hospital on overtime.”
Smith: “Just because you have a badge, you think you are all that, too.”
A few moments later Smith tries to stand up. The video shows Officer Murphy using a Taser on Smith.
“It felt like it went on forever,” Smith said of the incident.
Smith, who just got out of jail for minor offenses, is now talking about the incident for the first time. Investigators believe the Taser may have been used on him 20 times.
“I got hit from behind with the Taser, up in my shoulder area,” said Smith. “That’s the first time I noticed being tased. The second time was I got shot with it. It hit me in my back. I never even seen it coming.”
Smith’s attorney, who says his client has battled mental and psychological problems for years, wants answers.
“I would hate to think that any human being would tase someone 20 times, let alone a police officer and a person in a position of trust,” Shrager said.
Millvale Police say they conducted their own investigation. They say Officer Miller was disciplined, but would not reveal that discipline. She remains on the force.
Meanwhile, the Allegheny County District Attorney and FBI launched investigations, including a several hour interview with White in jail.
“We just want to know what happened that night,” Shrager added. “We just want to know the truth.”
Smith, who is now afraid of police, says he has a simple wish.
“I just want it to be over as quick as possible,” he said.
