Weekend Road Construction: Routes To Avoid

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Mild temperatures are on tap for the weekend and road crews will be taking full advantage of the weather.

They'll be working on two major projects that will impact traffic.

Southbound or inbound Route 28 will be restricted to a single lane around the clock from 8 p.m. on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday morning.

That single lane will stretch between the 40th Street Bridge and East Ohio Street.

The work which includes new utility connections is all part of the $36.4 million Route 28 improvement project.

"Be courteous and allow motorists to use all lanes up to the merge point and then merge in what we call or relate to a zipper pattern, where you come in and just weave nicely and everything will flow much smoother," Jim Struzzi with PennDOT said.

Another location to be aware of this weekend is a particular spot on the Parkway East.

As part of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel rehabilitation project, crews will be improving the ramps at the Edgewood-Swissvale interchange.

What motorists will encounter this weekend is the ramp if you're traveling from Swissvale toward Edgewood. The ramp that would take you from Braddock Avenue to the inbound Parkway East will be closed.

The closure will begin at 9 p.m. Friday and go through 5 a.m. Monday.

There will be a posted detour and it's actually the same one PennDOT put in place during the full inbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel closures over the summer.

With both of the projects this weekend, remember to give yourself extra time and be patient.
